MAR035 THE BRIEFS – Hit after Hit LP (release date: National Kickball Day, 4/17/16)

Newly Remastered pressing of The Briefs classic debut LP. Originally slated as a Record Store Day release for April 16th, 2016. However, in honor of National Kickball Day (April 17th, 2016), The Briefs made a last minute decision to back up the record release one day and challenged Bay Area powerhouse NOFX to a kickball match at their home field, the former site of Candlestick Park in Hunters Point. Using free copies of the new record as bait to boost attendance didnt work out so well as the attendance was a flop, however the kickball game was one for the ages…

Both teams rolled out their aces to the mound and the pitching duel was set: Steve e. Nix vs Fat Mike

Coming into the game as big underdogs, the ever-clever Briefs gained the upper hand early by hiring special guest referees:
Former Fat Wreck Chords artist Ben Weasel and former Fat Wreck chords employee Big Floyd

The Briefs took an early 3-0 lead thanks to their scrappy line up of consisting of:
Guitarist/Vocalist: Daniel J. Travanti, Drummer: Chris Brief, and the 1-2 Bass tandem of: Lance Romance and Kicks

NOFX struck right back with 3 runs of their own and held the Briefs scoreless for the next 7 innings behind the stellar defense of El Hefe

With the game tied in the bottom of the 9th inning, NOFX brought in their surprise closer: former guitarist and El Hefe predecessor, Steve Kidwiller. But thanks to a trick play dreamed up by the Briefs genius coaching staff of the Three Johnnys (Manager Johnny Falcon and Coaches Johnny Bonnel and Johnny Witmer) coupled with a questionable call by Ref Weasel at the plate, the game ended with a controversial yet dramatic 4-3 walk off Briefs victory!

Adding injury to insult, incensed by the suspect call at the plate, Fat Mike chased Mr. Weasel into the parking lot where he slipped on the remnants of a half eaten chili dog and broke both legs, thus putting an end to his summer hopes of a Punk Rock Bowling championship – get well mike!

Back in 2015, when Maniac recorded these tunes and wanted them released in a timely fashion, we stooges knew we wanted to release the record but we had already planned our fall-winter-spring-summer-fall-winter vacation. So what do honest, trustworthy friends do? Naturally we tricked the band and told them the record would be out by Christmas. Little did they know that we had a 6-season vacation planned and we meant Christmas 2016! Regardless, the band has been more than patient and kind in dealing with our procrastination tactics. As for the record, since a few copies were leaked to the press, listen to what the experts have to say:

This is the first appearance of the Odd Numbers release. 300 copies were ordered for the Briefs Halloween 2014 East Coast/Texas tour. Unforeseen copyright issues delayed production and 77 raw discs were expedited and arrived the day before the tour started. Art project ensued! Brown paper baggies were printed, hand-numbered and stamped with “2014 Tour edition” on the back. A mini-insert was included and sealed up with a MAR sticker. These copies were available from the band on the East Coast leg of the tour. 2 days later the other 234 CDs arrived shrink-wrapped in jewel cases and a few boxes were overnighted to a Briefs acquaintance in Texas and both CDs were available on the Texas leg…The remaining CDs are available here and a few stores..We got 10 of the tour CDs, limit 1 per person, first come first serve…..$10..

MAR031 BOATS! – Black and White LP (release date: Valentines Day, 2/14/15

Anything worth a squirt of piss is worth waiting for, or something like that? Back in 2011, the very ambitious BOATS! recorded this gem of an LP in the heart of the east bay by a guy in very popular band we’ll call MTX. In early 2012 during a binge drinking blackout, a pre-rehab version of a very popular east bay guy we’ll call BJA from another very popular east bay band we’ll call GD promised Boats! to release this gem of an LP on his label that we’ll call AR. By Mid 2012, the ambitious band grew tired of empty promises from a continuously drunken and incoherent BJA and his gang of drunken yahoos over at AR. The ambitious BOATS! in an effort to speed up the release of this gem of an LP, then made the fateful decision of teaming up with another gang of drunken, lying yahoos from a label that we’ll call MAR. By early 2013, the drunken, lying yahoos at MAR were able to piece together a few tour copies (34 to be exact) of this gem of an LP for Boats! 2013 pink winter blizzard tour that kicked off in Sonoma on St. Patricks Day! In the ensuing weeks, after sitting on the MAR HQ porch through a treacherous storm, the remaining copies of this gem of an LP quickly became water logged, soggy and for lack of a better description – ruined. The drunken, lying yahoos at MAR quickly (relatively speaking) replaced the ruined copies and quickly (relatively speaking) placed them into the trunk of Larry’s 1968 dodge coronet to be transported to the MAR HQ. Unbeknownst to the ambitious BOATS!, Larry and the 1968 coronet literally vanished off the face of the earth for the next 18 months. The drunken, lying MAR stooges continued on putting out records without Larry while secretly spending the last 18 months desperately searching for the coronet and the BOATS! records whereabouts. All the while continuously promising false release dates to the once ambitious BOATS! Little did BOATS! know that 2015 would turn out to be THE year. In early January 2015, just when they had given up all hope that this gem of an LP would ever see the light of day, an old man and his grandson were on their way to a local fishing hole and came across the totaled coronet in a ditch near Larry’s old campsite. Although Larry still hasn’t been located, a crowbar and sledgehammer uncovered the BOATS! records perfectly preserved in the trunk and aging like a fine wine. After the discovery, the plan was to release this record on the 2-year pink winter blizzard tour anniversary this St Pattys day (2015), but we figured enough was enough and due to the bands love of all things pink and precious, we decided to release this gem of an LP EARLY on valentines day! As with previous BOATS! releases they are not ashamed to wear their Briefs influence on their sleeves but this time they’ve added a little more muscle to the recipe (and we’re not just talking about David and his gym membership). This time they have stepped up their game, stepped up their production, stepped up their songwriting and recorded their 10 very best songs to date. This gem of an LP contains 10 short, fast, killer jabs to the teabags containing no breaks and no filler material. It is worth the wait! We truly apologize to BOATS! who have taken everything in stride and have not complained throughout this entire debacle!

September 8th 1993, 20 years ago to the day, a young Mike Lohrman turned 26 years old and was holed up in a small practice space with his newly formed band called THE STITCHES and recorded these 6 raw gems for your listening pleasure. The recording device was an old ghetto blaster with a sweaty t-shirt thrown over it to improve the sound quality – It didn’t work…Happy 46th Birthday Mike.

MAR 025 – Bad Coyotes – S/T 7″ (release date: Halloween 10/31/13)

Backstory…Night Birds, Sharp Objects, Ruleta Rusa, Bad Coyotes played a show. Bad Coyotes tore the place a new one. BC singer Jason, owns Eli’s Mile High Club in Oakland and Eli’s Mile High Club record label and had just released their debut 7″, which was basically being sold out of their homebase bar. This is that record. After hearing Junkie Suicide, we decided to buy up all their remaining copies, give it a Modern Action Records makeover and get it ready for a Halloween release. Halloween seemed perfect due to the sound being very reminiscent of some old lost Misfits Demos. 4 x raw, loud, blown out, trebly, garage bombers with static age-era Glenn Danzig wailing away thru a bullhorn! Not the usual MAR fare, but this baby is packed to the rim with enough pure sonic muscle to blow out yer neighbors speakers….

Bad Coyotes ripped the roof off as they always do live. Singer Jason owns Eli’s Mile High Club in Oakland

Jason and Eli’s also have a record label and put out a small run of their own debut 7″. They didn’t have much distro and based on that live show MAR decided to scoop up the remaining copies, give it a MAR makeover, try and cover up any reference to Eli’s and release it as our own.
